Mother-of-three Virginia Szaraz said she has padlocked her fridge and cupboards to try and stop her teenage son, Henry, from eating too much and gaining even more weight.
Henry has Prader-Willi syndrome, which creates a constant desire to eat food that is driven by a permanent feeling of hunger.
The incurable condition can easily lead to dangerous weight gain, and Henry, who has also developed diabetes, currently weighs more than 400lbs.
Other symptoms can include growth problems, learning difficulties and tantrums or stubbornness.
She told Daily Mail Australia :
"I'm 55 and caring for Henry on my own. There are no holidays. "In every aspect of his life he needs to be supervised. I need to assess whether I have locked the cupboard or the fridge before I go to the loo. "I might be gone for a couple of minutes and come back to find an empty jar of peanut butter under his bed with a teaspoon in it."She said her son is friendly and well-loved and well-known in the community.
Prader-Willi syndrome is caused by a genetic defect on chromosome number 15 and happen by chance.
